Larry Nassar

Larry Nassar was supposed to be a top notch doctor who worked with elite athletes, so young athletes went to him for injuries and broken bones thinking that he could help them.

However, the doctor followed a repeated pattern. Under the disguise of medical equipment, Nassar has admitted to sexually assaulting the athletes. He admitted to going back as far as 1998 to putting his finger into the vagina of girls as young as 13 and assaulting girls as young as six years old.  Into the sixth day of this trial, it is said that a total of 144 victim impact statements will be read in total. Victims got to deliver and talk about the hours of they spent of being assaulted and the tole it took on them after Nassar manipulated them.

He is facing 40 to 125 years of prison after pleading guilty to seven counts of sexual conduct in Ingham County, Michigan. Nassar has also already been sentenced to 60 years in prison for federal child pornography charges. He has pleaded guilty to ten charges of first-degree criminal sexual conduct.

The once prestigious doctor also worked as the gymnastics team doctor through four Olympic games. Women said they were pressured into silence by powerful forces after the abuse occurred. US gymnastics and Michigan State have separately come out and said that they had reported the incidents right away after hearing them but others stated that the incidents were ignored. Several board members of USA gymnastics have resigned.

Nassar sat at the witness stand so that victims could address him personally. For many, this was the first and only chance they would get to confront him face to face on how his assaults impacted their lives. Well known Olympians such as Simone Biles, Aly Raisman, Gabby Douglas, Jordyn Weiber, and McKayla Maroney all said they were abused by Nassar. On Tuesday, Kyle Stephens was one of those who had an emotional confrontation with Nassar telling the story about her first assault by him which occurred when she was only six years old. Three-time Olympic gold medalist Aly Raisman had an empowering speech and also stated that the USA gymnastics is “rotting from the inside.”

Rosemarie Aquilina is the judge of the case and she has stated that no matter the sentencing he receives of this trial, he will never get out of jail. Nassar has been sentenced to 175 years in prison. Nassar said that, “I will carry your words with me for the rest of my days” during his sentencing.
