Hot Chocolate is the key to warming up your soul! As long as I can remember, I always have loved the warm feeling I receive from it. Hot chocolate gets me in the holiday spirit! Personally, I can’t stand coffee, I know crazy right? I have tired pumpkin spice, every type of creamer you can think of, different amounts of sugar, I’ve even tired iced coffee! For some reason nothing ever sticks, so I always go back to my handy dandy hot chocolate! If you are like me, and all of your cooking skills is limited to the microwave, then you may think I’m crazy for giving you a homemade hot chocolate recipe. But honestly it is way easier than you would think, and I’m so sorry but it may be better than the box?

Now if we are going to do this together, you need to promise me to use that whole delicious milk. Now if you only have skim, low-fat, or even 2% milk will work, but come on sister, get up in that fatty goodness and indulge in some whole milk!

One of the most important parts is choosing your chocolate, now don’t take this step lightly. This is the bread and butter to your hot chocolate, I want you to really think about it! Personally I like to use milk chocolate because it has a sweeter taste! But you can use semi-sweet chocolate, or even bittersweet chocolate! Most times, I find myself using chocolate chips since they are always relatively available, but the most important thing is that you get to fully control your hot chocolate!

What you will need:

  •  ¼ cup of granulated sugar
  • 2 cups of whole milk (or whatever you have in the fridge)
  • 2 tbsp. cocoa powder
  • 1 cup of chopped chocolate (or chocolate chips)
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • Whipped Cream (optional)
  • Marshmallows (optional)

The first thing you want to do is grab a medium saucepan over a medium heat, the bring your milk to a simmer. Then you want to place the sugar and cocoa powder in, stir until there isn’t any lumps. After you are done whisking out the lumps, you want to stir in your chopped chocolate with the vanilla extract. Now don’t leave the milk unattended, you want to stir occasionally making sure your chocolate is being melted. Once your chocolate is completely melted, you can take the hot chocolate off the heat and pour into your favorite mugs! You can top the hot chocolate with marshmallows, whipped cream, or if you really want to you can add a scoop of ice cream! Now if you are feeling extra rebellious you can have all three toppings on your wonderful, easy, homemade hot chocolate!
