Highlights of the 2019 Golden Globes

Award show season is upon us as the Golden Globes have kicked off the new year with a night full of homage, solidarity, and congratulations. Held on January 6th, the prestigious ceremony recognizes actors, directors, and production teams for their work on movies, TV shows, and soundtracks from the previous year. The Sunday night special always promises mass amounts of Hollywood celebrities, couture fashion, and memorable moments. These are some of the highlights of the 76th annual Golden Globe Awards.

Bohemian Rhapsody

As one of the most anticipated movie releases of 2018, the tribute to Queen held up to the high expectations. The cast and crew sealed wins in both of their nominated categories, ‘Best Motion Picture – Drama’ and ‘Best Actor – Motion Picture Drama’. These were two of the most competitive awards this year as ‘A Star is Born’, ‘Black Panther’, and ‘BlacKkKlansman’ also received rave reviews. Rami Malek, who plays the iconic Freddie Mercury in the film, was overly thankful while accepting his award for best actor. Paying true homage in his acceptance speech, Malek said, “Thank you to Freddie Mercury for giving me the joy of a lifetime. I love you, you beautiful man. This is for and because of you, gorgeous.”

Lady Gaga

It has been speculated that Lady Gaga was the STAR of the entire night. Not only did she command the red carpet in a lavender Valentino dress and Tiffany Aurora necklace, she went on to accept the award for ‘Best Original Song – Motion Picture’ for the song Shallow from ‘A Star is Born’. Sung by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s characters in the film, the song has soared to the top of Billboard charts, becoming one of Gaga’s longest leading No. 1 singles. Songwriters Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando, and Andrew Wyatt collaborated with Lady Gaga on the track, which Cooper then weaved into the movie many are now calling their favorite. The win was a special moment for the entire team of ‘A Star is Born’ as it was shut out of its other nominated categories, ‘Best Actor’ and ‘Best Motion Picture’.

Time’s Up Lives On

The New York Times released the information regarding the ‘Time’s Up’ movement over a year ago. Today, it continues to thrive. Last year’s award show was highly publicized as nearly all guests voluntarily wore black, the color of solidarity, to fight against sexual harassment, gender equality, and women’s rights in a unified manner. Since the release of the movement, Time’s Up has raised over $22 Million for a legal defense fund established to help women who have fallen victim to assault, as well as raise awareness to the unfair justices that women face in America. This movement has been an ongoing project that is continuing it’s expanse in 2019, as many guests of the Golden Globes wore ‘Time’s Up’ bracelets and ribbons as a part of their wardrobe.
