Black History Month

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is a prominent figure celebrated during Black History Month. King is widely known for his significant help and participation in non-violent protests for the civil rights for African Americans. Martin was also a leader in the Montgomery Bus Boycott of 1955, one of the founders of the South Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), and won the Nobel Peace Prize at just 35 years old. (

Another notable historical figure celebrated during Black History Month is W.E.B. Du Bois. He was another African-American that lead in the civil rights movement during the first half of the 20th century. Du Bois co-founded the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People in 1909. (NAACP). W.E.B. Du Bois is also celebrated because he was the first African-American to earn a Ph.D. from Harvard University. (

Harriet Tubman is a well-known figure that is celebrated during Black History Month as well. Harriet helped with the underground railroad and used secret hiding tactics to transport run-away slaves into the North because slaves were considered to be free when the reached the North. She became known as the “the most famous conductor on the Underground Railroad”( She is widely celebrated because she risked her life to save hundreds of African-Americans from slavery and into freedom. She dedicated her life to helping African Americans which is why she is a prominent figure during Black History Month.
