Most Mysterious Unsolved Murders

1. Jack the Ripper

Jack the Ripper is one of the most popular serial killers known today. The killer got their name due to their brutal murders, often involving the removal of organs and deep stab wounds. The Ripper was a serial killer in Britain, specifically in Whitechapel near London. Jack was known to only target women, and had taken five victims all within the same year of 1888. Jack was never caught, and it’s thought that he’d either emigrated, died, or was imprisoned for some other reasons. There’s a museum now of The Ripper, and he even had a videogame DLC based off of his legacy in Assassin’s Creed Syndicate.

2. The Zodiac Killer

The Zodiac Killer case still remains active today, despite being opened in 1969. The Zodiac killer was popular for publicly taunting the police and local news organizations, sending encrypted letters. He was known to target young couples, knowingly having murdered five people, although he claimed to have murdered 37 when he sent a letter to a local news station claiming “Me=37, SFPD=0.” The Zodiac Killer got his name by claiming his name as “Zodiac.” While the Zodiac hasn’t reportedly struck or written since 1974, some believe he’s still out, while others believed he’s either too old or possibly dead.

3. The Murder of Black Dahlia

Elizabeth Short, also known as Black Dahlia was an American aspiring actress whose unsolved murder case was one of the first major crimes in America post- World War II. Her murder is one of the most famous cold cases due to the sheer brutality. She was mutilated and cut in half from the waist. The body was pale white due to the extreme loss of blood, and had been cleaned and posed by the killer as a show. She also had a carved smile in her face.

4. The Murder of Jon Benet Ramsey

Jon Benet Ramsey was a six-year-old American child beauty queen who was murdered on Christmas of 1996, and was found in her parents’ basement by her father shortly after she’d been reported missing. She died due to strangulation and trauma to the head. What makes the murder so mysterious is that there was a ransom note for the girl, as she had been reportedly stolen, although she was shortly found in her home, making it seem as though the murder was staged. Although the evidence points towards the parents committing the murder, the DNA results found at the case completely clear the family members.

5. The Cleveland Torso Murderer

The Cleveland Torso Murderer is a famous serial killer, local to Ohio. During the era of the Great Depression, between 1935-1938, twelve to twenty bodies were found in Kingsbury Run, beheaded and severely mutilated. Due to the fact that many of the killer’s victims were the working poor, and that most of the bodies were beheaded, many victims were never identified. Although two men were suspected, both were declared innocent. To this day, the serial murders remain unsolved.
